Objective: Introduce students to cognates and show them how visuals support communication and comprehension from day one.

Lesson Overview

1. After introducing yourself, project the Los G.O.A.T. Chat Mat and ask students to identify words they already recognize. As a class, discuss how they figured out the meanings, leading into a conversation about cognates and the role of visuals in language learning.

2. Next, challenge students to infer the meanings of unfamiliar words like zanahorias and rábanos using only the accompanying images. Continue by having students determine category words such as comida and cantante from the visual clues.

3. Once students are comfortable with the vocabulary, use the Chat Mat to guide your first all-Spanish class discussion. Speak slowly, gesture often, and rely on the visuals as students vote for their G.O.A.T. in each category. Count votes together in Spanish, invite students to suggest additional nominees, and celebrate the winners.

4. Close the lesson by asking students to reflect on what helped them understand so much Spanish on the very first day. Reinforce that the same supports—visuals, gestures, context, and comprehensible input—will be used throughout the year to help them succeed.
